The Rescuer God Promised is Born
Matthew 1:18-25
This is the true story about Jesus being born.
Jesus' mother, Mary, and a man called Joseph had agreed to get get married. But before they got married, Joseph found out that Mary was going to have a baby! The baby came from God, but all Joseph knew was that he was not the father of the baby. Because Joseph was a good man, he didn't want to marry Mary anymore. Because he was a kind man, he didn't want to embarass Mary by telling everyone about it. He quietly decided not to marry Mary.
After Joseph had decided he wasn't going to marry Mary, a special messenger from God spoke to him in a dream.
'Joseph, son of God's King David, you can be happy about marrying Mary. Her baby comes from God. She will have a baby boy. You must call him Jesus, because he will rescue his people from the bad way they treat God.' (That is what the name Jesus means.)
All this happened because God keeps his promises. God made a promise a long time before. It is written in God's book, the Bible: 'a special woman will have a baby boy called Emanuel'- which means, 'God with us.'
When Joseph woke up, he did what God's special messenger told him to do. Joseph married Mary, she had a baby boy and Joseph called him Jesus.
