The People Want to Kill Jesus
Luke 4:14-30
Jesus grew up in a town called Nazareth. He became a very famous teacher.
One day Jesus was teaching in the church in his home town of Nazareth.
He stood up and a man gave him a Bible to read. Jesus opened the Bible
and this is what he read aloud:
"God himself is with me because
He has chosen me
to tell the poor about the good news.
He has sent me
to tell the prisoners about their release
to tell the blind about giving back their sight and
He has sent me
to set the slaves free.
He has sent me
to tell everyone to see God's special kindness right now!"
Jesus closed the Bible. He handed it back to the man who had given it
to him. Then Jesus sat down. Everyone was staring at him. Jesus started
to teach them by saying:
"What God promised in the Bible has just come true today in front
of your own eyes!"
Everyone was amazed at what a good teacher Jesus was. They were amazed
because he was from their own home town, Nazareth. They had known Jesus
since he was a little boy. At first everyone liked what Jesus was saying
but then he went on to say:
"You don't really believe I am a messenger from God. No-one believes
God would chose messengers from their own home town. You have read it in
the Bible for yourselves. God's messengers are never liked by their neighbours.
So God sends them to take his message to strangers instead."
What Jesus said made all the people very angry. They got up and pushed Jesus out of the church. They took him to a cliff at the edge of Nazareth. They wanted to throw Jesus off the cliff but he escaped.
