God is Going to Punish Jesus
Matthew 26:36-56

Jesus went with his special friends to a garden. He told them to sit down, while he went away to pray. He took three of his special friends with him. Their names were Peter, John and James. Jesus started to get very upset. He said to Peter, John and James, 'I am so unhappy. Stay with me.'

Jesus walked away from them a little. He fell down to the ground and prayed, 'Father, please don't punish me. But if you have to punish me, I will do what you want me to do, even though I know I won't like it.'

Then Jesus went back to his friends. They were sleeping! Jesus said to Peter, 'you men can't even stay with me for a little while. Stay with me. Pray that you won't give in when you want to do the wrong thing. Even though you want to do the right thing, you are not strong enough to really do it.'

Jesus went away again to pray. 'Father, if you have to punish me, I will do what you want me to do.' When Jesus went back to his friends, they were sleeping again, because they were tired. So Jesus left them and went away to pray a third time. When he prayed, he said exactly the same things he prayed before, 'Father, if you have to punish me, I will do what you want me to do.'

Then he went back to his friends and said, 'You are still sleeping! The special time is almost here. A friend is going to cheat me and give me to evil people. Wake up! Come with me! Here comes the cheat!'

While Jesus was still speaking, one of his special friends called Judas arrived. There were lots of men with swords and sticks with him. The leaders of the people had sent them. Judas had promised the leaders that he would cheat Jesus. He said he would show them exactly which man was Jesus, so they could take him away. Judas said they would know which man was Jesus, because Judas would say 'hello' to Jesus first. Judas went straight up to Jesus and said 'Hello teacher.'

Jesus said, 'my friend, go ahead and do what you came here to do.'

Then the men with swords and sticks grabbed Jesus to take him away. One of Jesus' friends took out his sword, lifted it up and hit one of the men who had come to take Jesus away. Jesus' friend cut off the man's ear!

'Put your sword away,' Jesus told his friend, 'Everyone who uses a sword will be killed by a sword. Don't you know that I can ask my Father, God, for help? Straight away he would send his army to protect me. But I won't ask God for help, because he promised that this would happen in his book, the Bible. We are going to keep our promise.'

Then Jesus said to all the people, 'Am I a trouble-maker? Why have you brought swords and sticks to catch me and take me away? I have been teaching outside the church every day. You never tried to take me away then. God said that it would be like this in his book, the Bible. All this is happening because God is keeping his promise.' When they heard this, all Jesus' friends got scared and ran away!
