The theme for Wagga Summer Mission WSM 98/99 is:

Born Once - Die Twice
Born Twice - Die Once

We will be wearing t-shirts with 'Born Once - Die Twice' on the front and 'Born Twice - Die Once' on the back. We are expecting these to raise a lot of curiosity, which we will answer by handing out two-sided A5 leaflets with the following text.

What does that T-Shirt mean?
Born Once - Die Twice

We all know that everyone is born once and dies once. The Bible tells us that death is not the end of the story. This is not necessarily good news.

We've all seen signs that say, 'Danger! High Voltage!' or 'Go back! You are going the wrong way!' We've seen TV ads that warn us against speeding, drinking and driving etc. Why are we given the warnings? Have you given stern warnings to children when crossing a road? Why?

Warnings are not given to restrict our freedom. They are not simply given by people who look down on others with an air of moral superiority. We warn our children and friends because we understand that they are valuable, vulnerable and need to be responsible. We are like God in this. God warns us in the Bible because he cares about us and he knows our weaknesses- he made us!

The Bible warns us that after death we will all face God's perfectly fair judgement for all that we have done. If we are found guilty we face condemnation- a second death. It doesn't take much thought for any of us to realize we should all be found guilty.

"Man is destined to die once and after that to face judgement."
Hebrews chapter 9: verse 27

The Good News is there is a way out...

Born Twice - Die Once

You should not be surprised at my saying:
'You must be born again.' John chapter 3: verse 7

What does Jesus mean when he says, 'You must be born again?' It surprised the bloke he said it to. You've probably heard Christians called 'Born Agains.' Why do they call themselves that?

One thing that is clear is it's about a fresh start A fresh start with how we value ourselves and treat other people. It's not just that, though, is it? God, Jesus and the Bible are part of it.

The Bible explains that what we need most is not simply to fix things with people and have a fresh start. God warns us we need to fix things with him. We need a fresh start with God before we can fix anything. That's where Jesus comes in.

Jesus 'died once' so that all who want a fresh start with God can have it- they are 'born twice.'Jesus died our 'second death' in our place so we can have a 'second birth,' be 'born twice,' 'be born again.' He was condemned so that we will not be condemned.
